The adventure
Explore an isolated basalt ridge where generations of travelers left an extraordinary archaeological record above the Gila River.
Petroglyphs cover the volcanic basalt outcrops beside the old Gila River corridor. The archaeological landscape also includes old trails, rock alignments, geoglyphs, sleeping circles and other cultural features.
THE EXPERIENCE
Make it to the Sears Point trailhead kiosk, then explore the basalt ridge on foot until you've found at least five distinct petroglyph panels plus one other archaeological feature you can observe without disturbing. Five panels plus the bonus feature earns the outing.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Park in the cleared trailhead area by the kiosk and do not drive beyond the vehicle-control posts. Begin on foot at the basalt ridge immediately beyond the parking area. Petroglyphs occur from the lower rocks upward, so scrambling is optional rather than required for the basic adventure. Use existing paths and durable ground, keep your hands off the panels and return to the same trailhead when you've found five separate panels and one additional cultural feature.
GOOD TO KNOW
The final desert road is unmaintained and can be rough. Do not attempt it when wet; additional clearance is a smart choice. Rock art and archaeological features are irreplaceable. Photograph them without touching or altering them.
