The adventure
Circle two basalt hills covered with centuries of rock art and prove you can find five completely different designs.
Hundreds of figures and designs cover the basalt boulders at this archaeological site. The day-use area has shaded picnic structures, interpretive displays and vault toilets.
THE EXPERIENCE
Walk the interpretive route around Painted Rock's two petroglyph-covered hills and start hunting for variety. Spirals, animals, geometric marks and other designs are scattered across the basalt. Find five clearly different ancient designs without climbing on or touching the rocks.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
From I-8 use Painted Rock Dam Road at Exit 102 and travel north about 10.7 miles. Turn west onto Rocky Point Road and continue approximately 0.6 mile to the developed Painted Rock site. Use the designated day-use parking rather than a campground space. Follow the interpretive path from the day-use area around the petroglyph hills and return to the same parking area.
GOOD TO KNOW
There is no drinking water. Bring your own even for this short route. The final half-mile approach is hardened dirt and gravel and is generally suitable for ordinary vehicles when dry.
