Virgin Hemlock Trail Ancient Forest Walk

Walk into a quiet stand of towering hemlocks that has been growing for centuries. The Virgin Hemlock Trail offers a different kind of Coopers Rock experience: instead of exposed canyon overlooks, the reward is a shaded forest cathedral with textured bark, soft light and an unusually peaceful atmosphere.

The official state park trail listing describes a 1.2-mile route to a grove of hemlocks more than 300 years old. Take your time here, looking for the contrast between the older trees and the younger forest around them, and listen for the subtle sounds of woodland birds and wind moving through the canopy.

ONCE YOU’RE THERE

Enter the state forest at the signed main entrance. Use an official open parking area and the park trail map to locate the Virgin Hemlock Trail access from WV 73. Do not navigate to a point inside the forest.
