The adventure

Descend through sandstone and forest to one of Allegheny National Forest's signature reservoir overlooks. Drop from the forested plateau through boulders and stairs to Rimrock's rock ledges high above the Allegheny Reservoir.

This 0.5-mile out & back adventure in Allegheny National Forest / Warren is best approached as a real outing, not simply a pin on a map. The experience centers on Rimrock Hiking Trail and Overlook, with the route and stopping points chosen to make the defining features accessible from the documented public starting point. Allow time to enjoy the setting rather than racing through it.

GETTING THERE & STARTING OUT Drive Rimrock Road from Route 59 to its dead-end upper parking/picnic area. From the back edge of the lot, follow the signed path downhill through the woods. Use the wooden stairs and established walking surfaces through the large rock formations to the official viewing area. Do not improvise routes over exposed cliffs. Return uphill by the same approach. Your documented starting point is Rimrock Overlook Upper Parking Area. Use that access rather than navigating directly to a scenic feature, which may not have legal parking or a public approach. For driving navigation, the recorded destination is Rimrock Overlook, Rimrock Road, Bradford, PA 16701.

THE ROUTE & WHAT TO EXPECT The recorded outing is approximately 0.5 miles with about 125 feet of elevation gain and is categorized as moderate effort. Along the way, key route elements include forest path, wooden stairs, large sandstone rocks and Rimrock viewing area. The recorded time allowance is 0.75–1.25 hours. The route information describes the intended experience, not a guarantee that every segment is signed or maintained. Use the land manager’s current map and posted instructions to make decisions at junctions.

WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL The Forest Service map places the upper Rimrock trailhead/overlook access at 41.8448, -78.9460.
