The adventure
Ride a paved gorge trail through the valley where the world's commercial petroleum industry began. Ride the full paved Oil Creek bike trail through the valley where America's commercial petroleum industry exploded into existence.
This 19.4-mile out & back adventure in Oil Region / Titusville is best approached as a real outing, not simply a pin on a map. The experience centers on Oil Creek State Park — Paved Bicycle Trail, with the route and stopping points chosen to make the defining features accessible from the documented public starting point. Allow time to enjoy the setting rather than racing through it.
GETTING THERE & STARTING OUT From Titusville, follow signs toward Drake Well Museum and continue to the Jersey Bridge parking area before the Oil Creek crossing. Use the developed trailhead lot. Join the paved Oil Creek bicycle trail and ride south, staying on the designated multi-use pavement. Continue through the valley to the Petroleum Centre end of the 9.7-mile trail, then reverse course and return to Jersey Bridge. Never use the adjacent active railroad as a shortcut. Your documented starting point is Oil Creek State Park Jersey Bridge Trailhead. Use that access rather than navigating directly to a scenic feature, which may not have legal parking or a public approach. For driving navigation, the recorded destination is Jersey Bridge Parking Area, Oil Creek State Park, Titusville, PA.
THE ROUTE & WHAT TO EXPECT The recorded outing is approximately 19.4 miles with about 450 feet of elevation gain and is categorized as strenuous effort. The recorded time allowance is 2–4 hours. The route information describes the intended experience, not a guarantee that every segment is signed or maintained. Use the land manager’s current map and posted instructions to make decisions at junctions.
WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL Oil Creek Valley is the site of the world's first commercial oil well. The paved bike trail runs 9.7 miles between Jersey Bridge near Drake Well and Petroleum Centre. Historical markers along the route interpret boomtowns, wells and transportation from the 1860s petroleum rush. The railroad beside the trail is active. Enjoy the trains from the trail and stay completely off the tracks.
LOOK CLOSER Slow down at the historical markers. The forest is quiet now, but this valley once looked more like an industrial frenzy than a state park.
SEASON, CONDITIONS & SAFETY The park and trail are year-round, but snow and ice can make the paved corridor unsuitable for normal cycling. Seasonal services may be limited. Relevant hazards identified in the source research include shared trail traffic, active railroad, wet leaves, winter ice, long ride without shortcut. Before leaving, check temporary closures, storm damage, snow or ice, parking availability, posted land-manager advisories. Dogs are recorded as allowed on leash; follow all posted rules and keep them controlled.
BEFORE YOU GO No permit or reservation is required for ordinary individual day use. Pennsylvania state parks charge no entrance or day-use fee; ordinary use of the paved bike trail is free. Check current hours, trail or tour availability, and on-site signs before traveling. Bring appropriate water, footwear and layers for the terrain and forecast. Respect closures, neighboring private land and any protected natural or historic features.
