The adventure
A woodland trail winds through hardwood forest and gradually draws closer to a striking sandstone promontory. At the end, the New River Gorge Bridge appears across the canyon, suspended over layers of wooded mountains.
The reward is the contrast between quiet forest walking and an enormous engineering landmark. On clear days the gorge seems to stretch in every direction; in autumn, the slopes turn into a patchwork of color.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Follow the signed Long Point Trail from the public parking area to the exposed rock viewpoint and return by the same path.

The final viewpoint is exposed, and the best photographs can be made without approaching the edge.
