The adventure
The Great River State Trail threads through the Mississippi River backwaters, where quiet bike miles open into wetlands, wildlife habitat and the towering bluffs of western Wisconsin. The former railroad corridor offers an approachable way to cover ground while still noticing herons, waterfowl and changing river light.
A ride can be as leisurely or ambitious as you choose. Bridges and causeways pass marshy channels, and the landscape gradually shifts between shaded trees and open floodplain. For many riders, the best part is the feeling of traveling through a wildlife corridor rather than alongside a busy road.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Begin at an official Onalaska trail access and ride north on the signed corridor. Turn around at a distance suited to your group or plan a longer ride with a shuttle. Watch for road crossings and follow any posted flood detours.
LOCAL INTEL
This trail connects with the La Crosse River State Trail and offers access to the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge area. Seasonal high water can affect low-lying sections.
TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY
