The adventure

Northeast of Miles City, Matthews Recreation Area trades the familiar prairie horizon for higher ground above the Yellowstone River corridor. The bluff country is quiet, open and full of long views that reveal the shape of the surrounding valley.

The outing is an unhurried exploration of established public routes to a safe vantage point. With few built attractions competing for attention, the landforms, changing light and wide eastern Montana skyline become the experience.

ONCE YOU’RE THERE From Miles City follow Valley Drive East about nine miles, turn onto Tusler Road at the recreation-area sign, cross the railroad tracks and follow the signed access to the parking area. Walk only on established public routes, use a safe bluff viewpoint as your payoff and return to the lot.

WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL Walk the open bluff country northeast of Miles City and trade prairie for views across the Yellowstone River corridor. This is open eastern-Montana grassland and bluff terrain with big exposure to sun and wind. The recreation area overlooks country shaped by the Yellowstone River.

DON’T MISS THIS At your best viewpoint, turn a full circle and see how many distinct ridgelines you can pick out. The developed area includes a restroom and picnic facilities.

TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY Follow signed public access, remain on established routes and avoid unstable bluff edges. Dry grass can mean seasonal fire restrictions; check current conditions before heading out.

BEFORE YOU GO Plan for about ~1–1.5 hrs and 2 miles of travel. Return to the established start without extending the outing beyond your conditions and preparation. Check local conditions and access notices before departure.
