The adventure
Climb a rugged nine-mile state-forest loop from Pine Creek to some of the valley's biggest ridge views. Climb from Pine Creek to exposed ridge viewpoints on one of Pennsylvania's classic hard day-hike loops.
This 9-mile loop adventure in Pennsylvania Wilds / Cammal is best approached as a real outing, not simply a pin on a map. The experience centers on Tiadaghton State Forest — Golden Eagle Trail, with the route and stopping points chosen to make the defining features accessible from the documented public starting point. Allow time to enjoy the setting rather than racing through it.
GETTING THERE & STARTING OUT Follow PA 414 through the Pine Creek valley to the signed Golden Eagle Trail parking area near Cammal. Park completely within the established roadside lot. Pick up the marked Golden Eagle Trail and follow the full loop rather than using vista-only shortcuts. Expect steep climbing from the valley, rocky ridge travel and a sustained descent before returning to PA 414 near the starting area. Your documented starting point is Golden Eagle Trail Parking along PA 414. Use that access rather than navigating directly to a scenic feature, which may not have legal parking or a public approach. For driving navigation, the recorded destination is Golden Eagle Trail, PA-414, Cammal, PA 17723.
THE ROUTE & WHAT TO EXPECT The recorded outing is approximately 9 miles with about 2500 feet of elevation gain and is categorized as strenuous effort. Along the way, key route elements include Pine Creek, ridge vistas, Raven's Horn area and steep forested climbs. The recorded time allowance is 5–7 hours. The route information describes the intended experience, not a guarantee that every segment is signed or maintained. Use the land manager’s current map and posted instructions to make decisions at junctions.
WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL Golden Eagle is a demanding state-forest loop with roughly 2,500 feet of climbing. The route rises from Pine Creek to multiple dramatic viewpoints over the valley. Steep rocky descents make the second half demand attention even after the climbing is mostly over. This is remote state-forest terrain with limited services and inconsistent cell coverage.
LOOK CLOSER The famous vista is the headline, but Raven's Horn gives you another rocky perch above Pine Creek before the loop is done with your legs. Golden Eagle is widely recognized as a premier strenuous loop in the Pine Creek region.
SEASON, CONDITIONS & SAFETY State forest remains open year-round; snow, ice, leaf cover and hunting seasons affect conditions. Relevant hazards identified in the source research include steep climbs, rocky descents, exposed viewpoints, remote terrain, limited cell service. Before leaving, check trail closures, storm damage, hunting seasons, snow or ice. Dogs are recorded as allowed on leash; follow all posted rules and keep them controlled.
BEFORE YOU GO No permit or reservation is required for ordinary day hiking. Pennsylvania state forest hiking and trailhead day use are free; no Golden Eagle Trail fee is identified. Check current hours, trail or tour availability, and on-site signs before traveling. Bring appropriate water, footwear and layers for the terrain and forecast. Respect closures, neighboring private land and any protected natural or historic features.
