Ride a remote out-and-back through Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon on the old railroad grade beside Pine Creek. Ride from tiny Blackwell north through one of the most remote pieces of the Pine Creek Rail Trail, then pedal the whole canyon stretch back.
This 16.6-mile out & back adventure in Pennsylvania Wilds / Blackwell is best approached as a real outing, not simply a pin on a map. The experience centers on Pine Creek Rail Trail — Blackwell to Tiadaghton, with the route and stopping points chosen to make the defining features accessible from the documented public starting point. Allow time to enjoy the setting rather than racing through it.
GETTING THERE & STARTING OUT Drive PA 414 to Blackwell and use the developed Blackwell Access parking on the east side of Pine Creek. Join the Pine Creek Rail Trail and ride north, keeping to the designated trail through the gorge. Continue approximately 8.3 miles to Tiadaghton Access, use it as your turnaround, then retrace the rail trail south to Blackwell. Do not depend on cell service or roadside support in the remote section. Your documented starting point is Pine Creek Rail Trail Blackwell Access. Use that access rather than navigating directly to a scenic feature, which may not have legal parking or a public approach. For driving navigation, the recorded destination is Blackwell Access, Pine Creek Rail Trail, Blackwell, PA 16938.
THE ROUTE & WHAT TO EXPECT The recorded outing is approximately 16.6 miles with about 300 feet of elevation gain and is categorized as strenuous effort. The recorded time allowance is 2–4 hours. The route information describes the intended experience, not a guarantee that every segment is signed or maintained. Use the land manager’s current map and posted instructions to make decisions at junctions.
WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL The Pine Creek Rail Trail runs more than 62 miles through Tioga and Lycoming counties and follows Pine Creek for most of its length. Pennsylvania named Pine Creek Rail Trail its 2026 Trail of the Year. The route follows an abandoned railroad grade, so the climbing is gentle even while canyon walls rise around you. The Blackwell-to-Tiadaghton section is remote. Carry water, a tube/repair kit and enough daylight for the return.
LOOK CLOSER The gorge is more than scenery. Stop where the trail opens toward Pine Creek and listen for the river echoing between the walls.
SEASON, CONDITIONS & SAFETY The trail is public year-round, but snow and ice can make normal cycling unsuitable and seasonal facilities may be unavailable. Relevant hazards identified in the source research include remote corridor, bike mechanical failure, shared trail users, heat, winter ice, limited cell service. Before leaving, check trail closures, storm damage, snow or ice, parking availability. Dogs are recorded as allowed on leash; follow all posted rules and keep them controlled.
BEFORE YOU GO No permit, reservation, shuttle or paid service is required because this Challenge is an out-and-back ride returning to the same vehicle. DCNR manages the Pine Creek Rail Trail on state forestland, which is free and open to the public; no bicycle trail-use fee is required for this Challenge. Check current hours, trail or tour availability, and on-site signs before traveling. Bring appropriate water, footwear and layers for the terrain and forecast. Respect closures, neighboring private land and any protected natural or historic features.
