The adventure
The Shenandoah arrives at Harpers Ferry beneath steep wooded ridges, joining the Potomac in one of the Appalachian region’s most memorable river landscapes. Here the current, rail bridges, and old town streets share a narrow mountain gateway.
This gentle historic walk focuses on the confluence and the scenery around it, with opportunities to read interpretive signs and watch the changing light over the water. It is best enjoyed slowly, with time to explore the public streets and river overlooks.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Start at the park visitor center and follow the park shuttle or approved pedestrian route to Lower Town. Use signed public access toward The Point for the Shenandoah-Potomac confluence. Follow posted signs and stay on the designated public route.
LOCAL INTEL
Use established viewpoints only; the confluence is not a safe place for casual swimming or unsupervised boating.
GOOD TO KNOW
Carry water, check weather and closures before departure, and follow local land-manager instructions.
