Saugatuck Dunes State Park Beach Trail

Tall forested dunes shelter a quiet stretch of Lake Michigan shore, where the sand feels far removed from nearby resort towns. The walk begins beneath hardwood trees, then climbs and dips over sandy ridges before the forest opens onto waves and a broad beach.

The reward is the contrast between cool woodland and bright open shoreline. Wind reshapes the beach throughout the season, and the park’s protected dune habitat rewards a slower pace and an eye for native plants.

ONCE YOU’RE THERE

Follow the yellow Beach Trail from the main lot to the lakeshore; return the same way or use the official park map to select a longer marked circuit.

LOCAL INTEL

The Michigan DNR lists the Beach Trail at 0.75 mile one way. Sand adds effort even though the distance is short.

TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY

Stay on designated paths to protect fragile dune vegetation. Lake Michigan waves and currents can be dangerous; avoid steep eroding sand faces.
