Out & back

The adventure

Hike past old mine remnants to a natural arch and a high perch over the Colorado River south of Hoover Dam.

Liberty Bell Arch is a natural rock opening whose shape inspired its name. The route passes remnants connected to historic magnesium mining from the World War II era.

THE EXPERIENCE

Start at White Rock Canyon, follow the wash beneath the highway and take the Liberty Bell Arch route toward the old mining remains and natural arch. Continue beyond the arch to the high Colorado River overlook. Find the bell and earn the thousand-foot river view, then return to the trailhead to complete the outing.

ONCE YOU’RE THERE

Park in the large shared White Rock Canyon trailhead lot just off US 93 south of Hoover Dam. Follow the route west beneath the highway bridge and into the wash. Stay with the Liberty Bell Arch route as it leaves the main canyon, passes historic mining remains and reaches the arch. Continue to the high Colorado River viewpoint before retracing your route to the same parking lot.

GOOD TO KNOW

The payoff beyond the arch includes a panoramic view roughly 1,000 feet above the Colorado River. This trail is closed every year from May 15 through September 30 because of dangerous heat.
