The adventure
Hike through an unmaintained desert wash to a giant natural arch shaped like the Liberty Bell and a high overlook above the Colorado River.
The arch even has a rounded rock 'clapper,' which is how the formation earned its Liberty Bell name. The route passes remnants of a magnesium mine dating to the World War II era.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Park at the White Rock Canyon trailhead just off US-93 south of Hoover Dam. Head west beneath the highway bridge and follow the unmaintained wash route through sand, gravel, boulders and short rock ledges. Pass the historic mining remnants, continue to Liberty Bell Arch and then to the high river overlook. Return the same way. Do not attempt the route during its annual May 15–September 30 closure or any additional heat closure.
LOCAL INTEL
Before the arch gets all the attention, find the remnants of the World War II-era magnesium-mining operation along the route.
