The adventure

The Elroy-Sparta State Trail transforms an abandoned railroad corridor into one of Wisconsin's most memorable cycling adventures. Stretching through wooded valleys, rolling farmland, and small historic communities, this crushed-limestone rail trail is famous for its three railroad tunnels. Riding toward the dark stone portals feels like traveling backward in time, with the surrounding hills and quiet countryside providing a beautiful contrast to the industrial history of the route.

Originally developed along a former Chicago and North Western Railway corridor, the trail became an early landmark in America's rail-trail movement. The experience can be tailored from a short recreational ride to a full 32.5-mile journey between Elroy and Sparta. Historic depots, rural scenery, and dramatic tunnel passages make this more than an ordinary bike ride. It is a combination of outdoor recreation, railroad heritage, and small-town Wisconsin exploration.

ONCE YOU'RE THERE

Begin at Kendall Depot, where trail information and parking are available. Choose a ride toward Elroy or Sparta using the official trail map. Follow the crushed-limestone corridor and obey posted instructions at tunnel entrances. Dismount and walk your bicycle through tunnels where required. Return to Kendall along the same route unless you have arranged transportation for a longer point-to-point ride.

LOCAL INTEL

The trail's historic tunnels are its signature attraction. They are dark, cool, and can be wet even when conditions outside are warm and dry.

HISTORY UNDERFOOT

The former railroad corridor was converted into a recreational trail during the early rail-trail movement, preserving historic transportation infrastructure for outdoor exploration.

FEES & ACCESS

Cyclists age 16 and older need a Wisconsin State Trail Pass. The tunnels are seasonally closed from November 1 through April 30.

TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY

The crushed-limestone surface is generally suitable for hybrid and gravel bicycles. Bring a bright flashlight or headlamp for the tunnels. Watch for wet footing, low visibility, and other trail users.
