Loop
The adventure
Dolly Sods feels unlike almost anywhere else in West Virginia: wind-shaped spruce, open heath barrens, rocky uplands, and distant blue ridges give the plateau a northern, almost alpine character.
A longer northern loop trades constant overlooks for changing ecosystems, from exposed high ground to wet meadows and forest pockets. Weather shifts quickly here, and the wildness is the main attraction.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Use the Forest Service wilderness map to assemble a north-area loop using signed established trails; confirm junctions and mileage for your chosen loop before departure.
