The adventure

Devil's Lake State Park delivers one of Wisconsin's most dramatic hiking experiences, with towering purple-gray quartzite bluffs rising hundreds of feet above a deep blue lake. The East Bluff Trail climbs into this ancient rocky landscape, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the water, forested hills, and remarkable geological formations. The scenery is especially striking in autumn, when colorful hardwood forests contrast with the exposed quartzite cliffs.

The adventure combines a demanding uphill climb with a series of spectacular overlooks that make every step worthwhile. These rocks are part of the Baraboo Range, an ancient geological formation shaped by immense forces long before the glaciers created the surrounding landscape. The trail is also part of a larger hiking network connected to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, making this an excellent introduction to Wisconsin's rugged glacial country.

ONCE YOU'RE THERE

Start from the North Shore visitor area and follow signs for East Bluff Trail. The trail climbs steeply through wooded slopes before reaching exposed quartzite viewpoints. Continue along the marked bluff trail, stopping only at safe overlooks. Return by retracing your route or consult the official trail map for a longer loop using connecting trails.

LOCAL INTEL

Devil's Doorway and Balanced Rock are famous formations associated with the East Bluff trail network. Reaching them may require additional connecting trails and steep rocky sections.
