The adventure
Turner Lake offers a quieter paddling alternative to the motorboat-heavy waters of the larger Chain O’Lakes system. Tucked inside Chain O’Lakes State Park, this 44-acre lake is an appealing place to practice easy strokes, explore a sheltered shoreline, and enjoy the view from a low, water-level perspective. It feels like a different adventure from the park’s land trails, even though the same woodland setting surrounds both.
The best way to experience Turner Lake is without a rigid itinerary: launch carefully, stay within comfortable distance of shore, and spend time observing the changing light and marshy edges. The lake allows only electric trolling motors, but paddlers should still stay aware of other boats and changing weather. It is an approachable destination for those who already have basic kayak handling and safety skills.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Use the Turner Lake South Campground entrance parking area identified by Illinois DNR, carry your kayak to the designated launch, and paddle a conservative shoreline out-and-back. Return to the same launch.
FEES, PERMITS & ACCESS
Illinois DNR reports no charge to launch at the park, but waterway fees can apply to boats using the larger Chain O’Lakes. Confirm current requirements for your specific watercraft and lake.
WATER SAFETY
Wear a properly fitted life jacket. Avoid paddling during thunderstorms or high winds, and do not assume swimming conditions are safe.
