The adventure
A wooden boardwalk carries visitors into an unusual floating landscape of sphagnum moss, tamarack, open water, and wetland vegetation. Volo Bog is a rare chance to explore a classic northern bog without leaving the Chicago region. The contrast between surrounding woodland and the quiet open center gives this short walk a surprising sense of wilderness.
This is not a conventional lakeshore stroll. The plant communities change as the walkway approaches the bog’s eye, and the habitat reveals a long story of glacial lakes slowly filling with vegetation. A leisurely pace is best: watch for dragonflies, subtle shifts in the moss mat, and the way the light changes across the wetland.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Begin at the visitor center parking area and follow signs for the half-mile interpretive bog trail and boardwalk. Stay on the marked boardwalk; the wetland mat is fragile. Return by the signed route to the visitor center.
LOCAL INTEL
The visitor center occupies a converted historic dairy barn. Illinois DNR also describes a longer five-mile trail for visitors who want additional walking.
