Restored riverbanks and urban greenway through Waltham
What you'll do
Start at Woerd Avenue Boat Launch, then follow the route about 4 miles round trip. Complete approximately four river miles and return to Woerd Avenue under paddle power.
Expect flatwater river.
What you're looking at
- Native riverbank vegetation has been restored along parts of the Upper Charles corridor, supporting returning birds and wildlife.
- The reservation threads a navigable green corridor through several densely populated Greater Boston communities.
Once you're there
Use the established Woerd Avenue Boat Launch and stage your kayak or canoe without blocking the ramp. Launch onto the Upper Charles and choose a direction based on current conditions and other river traffic.
Paddle approximately two river miles, using recognizable bridges and shoreline features to track your turnaround, then retrace the river to Woerd Avenue. Keep enough energy in reserve for wind or current on the return and land at the same launch.
Don't miss
Keep your eyes on the banks and quiet water for one of the Upper Charles regulars—herons, muskrats or a very unhurried snapping turtle.
Good to know
- Access
- Current state paddling guidance says permits are not required for personal canoe and kayak use.
- Best time to go
- Open-water paddling is most practical in ice-free months. Cold water, ice, flood conditions and storms can make the outing unsuitable outside normal paddling season.
- Hours
- Dawn to dusk
- Parking
- Free on-site parking is identified along the Upper Charles Reservation; confirm posted conditions at the launch.
- Restrooms
- Restrooms exist at selected Upper Charles Reservation facilities but should not be assumed immediately at the ramp.
- Hazards
- Cold water, wind, changing current, high water after storms, other water users
- Wildlife
- Black-crowned night heron, muskrat, snapping turtle
- Dogs
- Dogs are allowed in the Upper Charles River Reservation; standard park guidance calls for leashes unless a specific area is designated otherwise.
- REAL LAUNCH
- Woerd Avenue is an established boat-launch access on the Upper Charles, not a random riverbank with optimistic parking.
- WILDLIFE CORRIDOR
- The Upper Charles corridor supports black-crowned night herons, muskrats, snapping turtles and other urban-edge wildlife.
- BRING YOUR OWN
- Personal canoe and kayak use does not require a state recreation permit; bring-your-own-boat paddling keeps the outing itself free.
- CHECK THE WATER
- Flatwater does not mean identical conditions every day. Wind, recent rain, current and water level can change the return effort.
- Surface
- Flatwater river
- Managed by
- Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation — Upper Charles River Reservation.
Please respect the place
- Personal paddling does not require a permit
- Wear a properly fitted PFD and follow current Massachusetts boating requirements
- River current, wind and water level can change the effort
- Do not enter the water when flood, storm or unsafe-current conditions are present
