The adventure

Circle a 110-room hilltop pueblo, step inside its citadel and climb to a rooftop view over the Verde Valley.

Tuzigoot preserves a pueblo of roughly 110 rooms built beginning around A.D. 1000. The 0.3-mile Pueblo Trail is paved, but some grades are steep and the citadel roof requires stairs.

THE EXPERIENCE

Walk the Pueblo Trail around Tuzigoot's hilltop village, then enter the permitted citadel room and take the stairs upward. Your destination is the roof, where the Verde Valley spreads out below a village whose story began roughly a thousand years ago. Reach the citadel roof.

ONCE YOU’RE THERE

Follow Tuzigoot Road to the monument and park in the paved visitor parking area beside the Visitor Center. Check in and pay or show your pass before starting. Follow the signed 0.3-mile Pueblo Trail around the archaeological site. Only enter rooms specifically opened to visitors. Inside the citadel, use the designated stairs to reach the roof, then continue the paved loop back to the Visitor Center.

GOOD TO KNOW

There is very little shade on the Pueblo Trail. Summer pavement can become dangerously hot for paws. The visitor center has a museum, restrooms and the required entrance check-in.

FEES & ACCESS

A $10 entrance fee per adult age 16+ is required. The fee is valid for Tuzigoot and Montezuma Castle for 7 days, and qualifying passes are accepted.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Check seasonal weather, access and land-manager advisories before departure.
