Distance
0.4 mi round trip
Elevation gain
~100 ft
Route
Loop + optional stair spurs
The adventure
Circle an improbable spring-fed sinkhole where cliff dwellings cling to the rim and water disappears through rock into an ancient irrigation system.
Montezuma Well is a collapsed limestone feature continuously fed by underground spring water. The main loop is short, but optional spurs include 116 stairs down toward the swallet and 49 stairs to the outlet area.
THE EXPERIENCE
Walk to the overlook above Montezuma Well, spot the ancient cliff dwellings tucked into its rim and continue far enough to find where the water escapes toward the prehistoric irrigation canal. See the water, the homes and the outlet.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Use the paved signed approach from I-17 Exit 293 through McGuireville and Rimrock rather than any GPS-suggested backcountry shortcut. Enter the monument and park in the main Montezuma Well parking area beside the contact station. Start the established paved touring trail from the lot.
