The adventure

Start beside a working Erie Canal lock, disappear into the wooded Mohawk River corridor and complete Niskayuna's long John Brown Trail before returning to the canal machinery where you started.

What you'll do

Start at Lock 7 Park parking and boat-launch area at the end of Lock 7 Road, then follow the route about 7.5 miles round trip. complete John Brown hiking route and visit Lock E7

Expect wooded river-corridor trails with generally modest rolling relief.

Expect roughly 350 ft of climbing along the way.

same Lock 7 Park arrival

Once you're there

Drive Lock 7 Road all the way to the public park and boat-launch parking area. Begin by orienting yourself at Lock E7, then pick up the established John Brown hiking route through the surrounding wooded parkland.

Follow the marked public trail system rather than canal-service roads or restricted lock infrastructure. Complete the hiking circuit and return to the same Lock 7 parking area.

Don't miss

If boat traffic cooperates, hang around long enough to watch Lock E7 cycle. Seeing an entire boat rise or drop inside a concrete chamber makes the canal system suddenly make a lot more sense.
