The adventure
Just outside Charleston, Kanawha State Forest holds a network of wooded hillsides, stream valleys and quiet ridgelines. Mountain bikers can move quickly from the city into shady hardwood forest where the trails twist with the contours of the land.
The ride can be built from shorter connected segments instead of one prescribed circuit. Dense green foliage, occasional rocky tread and sustained small climbs give the forest a surprisingly remote feel for its proximity to the capital.
ONCE YOU'RE THERE
Park at an official day-use area, consult the forest map and assemble a six-mile ride using trails currently designated for cycling.
LOCAL INTEL
After rain, clay and roots can stay slippery even when the entrance road is dry.
TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY
Yield to hikers and horses where shared-use, avoid wet trails and carry a map.
FEES & ACCESS
No general day-use admission listed; check for parking or optional activity fees.
BEFORE YOU GO
Spring through autumn; check trail-use rules.
