The adventure
A long spine of ancient volcanic rock runs across Isle Royale, carrying backpackers through quiet boreal forest, rocky overlooks and a landscape shaped by Lake Superior. The Greenstone Ridge Trail is an immersive wilderness traverse where loons, moose and sweeping water views define the days.
Far from roads and towns, the experience is about deliberate travel: filtering water, carrying food, reading the weather and reaching remote campgrounds by foot. Each day reveals a different combination of ridgeline, wetland and island solitude.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Start at the Rock Harbor arrival dock, obtain required backcountry information and follow NPS-marked connecting trails to the Greenstone Ridge route. Plan campsites and your Windigo exit before departure.
