The adventure
Governor Dodge State Park protects a rugged stretch of Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, where wooded valleys and sandstone walls replace the flatter landscapes many travelers expect. Lost Canyon is a wonderful way to experience that contrast. The trail moves through sheltered forest and broken rock terrain, with steep hillsides and quiet pockets that can feel far removed from nearby roads.
This is a landscape shaped by streams and erosion rather than the sweeping glacial deposits found elsewhere in Wisconsin. Seasonal wildflowers and changing forest light add texture to the canyon walk. The park’s broader network also includes lakes and a waterfall, but this outing focuses on the canyon itself rather than combining separate destinations into one oversized route.
ONCE YOU'RE THERE
Use the official park entrance on Highway 23, obtain a trail map, and drive on signed park roads to the designated Lost Canyon Trail parking access. Follow the marked loop, paying attention at junctions, and return to the same parking area.
LOCAL INTEL
After wet weather, sandstone and clay-rich trail sections can be slippery; stay on the established route.
FEES, PERMITS & ACCESS
Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission is generally required; check current pass rules and any activity-specific restrictions.
TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY
Wear footwear appropriate to the terrain, follow marked trails, and check seasonal closures and weather before departing. Avoid exposed edges and unstable rock.
