The adventure
Above the western edge of Duluth, Ely’s Peak combines rocky hill-country views with a remarkable piece of railroad history. Forest trails climb toward exposed stone while the former Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific rail corridor threads through the landscape.
The old railroad tunnel is a memorable destination in its own right, a dark passage cut through the rock. Hikers can choose the easier rail-grade approach or add the steeper peak trails for a more demanding outing with broad views over the surrounding hills.
ONCE YOU’RE THERE
Park at Short Line Park and follow the signed access path to the DWP trail and historic tunnel. For the summit, use a current trail map and remain on marked hiking routes. Retrace the approach to the lot.
LOCAL INTEL
Duluth reopened the Ely’s Peak tunnel and Becks Road access after rock-scaling work in 2020; always check current trail conditions.
TRAIL CONDITIONS & SAFETY
Carry a headlamp for the tunnel, watch for bicycles, and avoid exposed rock edges and any climbing routes without proper gear.
FEES & ACCESS
No general trail admission fee identified; observe posted parking rules.
