Route

Out & back

The adventure

An unforgettable paddle begins where the road gives way to northern forest and interconnected water. The Boundary Waters offer quiet shorelines, granite, waterfowl, and the satisfying rhythm of a canoe moving across wilderness lakes and rivers. Even a day outing can feel far removed from modern life.

Choose a manageable out-and-back from the signed entry point, watching the wind and your return time. The route should be planned from current USFS maps, with portages and campsite boundaries respected. This is not a guided outing or a marked loop.

ONCE YOU’RE THERE

Use the officially signed South Kawishiwi River entry-point access and parking area off the forest road network southeast of Ely. Follow the current USFS map and entry-point signs rather than navigating to an open-water coordinate. Confirm the entry-point number and permit before leaving Ely.
