The adventure
Ride the official six-mile white-triangle mountain-bike loop through the Houghton's Pond side of Blue Hills.
Roll away from Houghton's Pond and lock onto the white triangles. Follow the Forest Path in its required counterclockwise direction, handle the rolling woodland terrain and every marked intersection, and don't shortcut the six-mile circuit.
Large urban-edge forest reservation
What you'll do
Start at Houghton's Pond main parking lot and kiosk, then follow the route about 6 miles round trip.
Expect rolling woodland trail with mixed widths and natural obstacles.
Expect roughly 500 ft of climbing along the way.
What you're looking at
- Blue Hills protects more than 7,000 acres only minutes from Boston.
- The Forest Path and Breakneck Ledge loops are specifically marked as counterclockwise directional routes.
Once you're there
Park free at Houghton's Pond and begin at the main kiosk. Find the white-triangle directional markers and ride the Forest Path counterclockwise; the loop is designed to begin and end here.
Use the numbered intersection markers and current mountain-bike map whenever trails split. Stay off red/no-bike routes, yield to foot and horse traffic, and finish the loop back at the same parking area.
Don't miss
Use the numbered trail intersections at least once instead of blindly chasing the rider ahead. Blue Hills quietly gives you a navigation system if you bother to notice it.
