This 0.5-mile boardwalk out & back with road return option adventure in Allegheny Plateau / Philipsburg is best approached as a real outing, not simply a pin on a map. The experience centers on Black Moshannon State Park — Bog Trail, with the route and stopping points chosen to make the defining features accessible from the documented public starting point. Allow time to enjoy the setting rather than racing through it.

GETTING THERE & STARTING OUT Navigate to Black Moshannon State Park's Boating Area 3 on the west side of the lake. Park in the developed boating-area lot and use the ADA approach to the yellow-blazed Bog Trail. Stay on the boardwalk as it crosses the wetland. At the far end, either retrace the boardwalk or use Westside Road to complete the approximately half-mile loop back toward the starting area. Your documented starting point is Black Moshannon State Park Boating Area 3. Use that access rather than navigating directly to a scenic feature, which may not have legal parking or a public approach. For driving navigation, the recorded destination is Black Moshannon State Park Boating Area 3, Philipsburg, PA 16866.

THE ROUTE & WHAT TO EXPECT The recorded outing is approximately 0.5 miles with about 20 feet of elevation gain and is categorized as light effort. Along the way, key route elements include ADA boardwalk, sphagnum bog, leatherleaf, carnivorous plants and wayside panels. The recorded time allowance is 0.5–1 hours. The route information describes the intended experience, not a guarantee that every segment is signed or maintained. Use the land manager’s current map and posted instructions to make decisions at junctions.

WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL Black Moshannon's wetlands include what DCNR describes as Pennsylvania's finest reconstructed bog. The Bog Trail boardwalk passes sphagnum moss, leatherleaf, sedges, rushes, lilies and carnivorous plants. Boating Area 3 provides the ADA-accessible approach to the Bog Trail. Wayside panels along the route explain why this cool plateau supports such unusual wetland communities.

LOOK CLOSER Slow down and scan the wetland beside the boardwalk for the insect-eating plants that thrive in the bog's nutrient-poor environment. Sphagnum, leatherleaf, sedges, rushes, lilies and carnivorous plants occur along the trail. DCNR identifies the Black Moshannon Bog Natural Area as the largest/fine reconstructed bog wetland landscape in the state.

SEASON, CONDITIONS & SAFETY Trail is generally year-round; snow and ice can affect boardwalk conditions and some facilities are seasonal. Relevant hazards identified in the source research include wet surfaces, mosquitoes, winter ice. Before leaving, check boardwalk maintenance, snow or ice, temporary park advisories. Dogs are recorded as allowed on leash; follow all posted rules and keep them controlled.

BEFORE YOU GO No permit or reservation is required for the Bog Trail. The Challenge is ordinary day hiking on a Pennsylvania state-park trail; no entrance, parking or trail fee is required.
